Note: There is internal assessment of 50 marks and practical 100 marks.

Unit I  Introduction 
Drawing Instruments and their uses, BIS conventions, Lettering, Dimensioning line, Conventions.

Unit II AUTO CAD                                                                                                     2–Sheets
Layout of the software, standard tool bar/menus and description of most commonly used toolbars, navigational tools. Co-ordinate system and reference planes. Definitions of HP, VP, RPP &LPP. Creation of 2D/3D environment. Selection of drawing size and scale. Commands and creation of Lines, Co-ordinate points, axes, poly-lines, square, rectangle, polygons, splines, circles, ellipse, text, move, copy, off-set, mirror, rotate, trim, extend, break, chamfer, fillet, curves, constraints.

Unit III Orthographic Projections                                                                                2–Sheets
Introduction, Definitions - Planes of projection, reference line and conventions employed, Projections of points in all the four quadrants, Projections of straight lines (located in First quadrant/first angle only),True and apparent lengths, True and apparent inclinations to reference planes.

Unit I
Projections of Points, Straight Lines and Planes: Types and use of Lines, Lettering & Dimensioning, Various types of projection System, Projection of Points in different quadrants, projections of lines and planes for parallel, perpendicular & inclined to horizontal and vertical reference planes.

Unit II
Projections Solids and Development of Surfaces: Cylinder, Cone, Pyramid, & Sphere with axes parallel, perpendicular & inclined to both reference planes. Development of surfaces of various solids. Sections of Solids Section planes, Sectional views, True shape of Sections for Prism, Cylinder, Pyramid, and Cone & Sphere. Orthographic Projections of Simple objects and Machine Components like Bolts and Screw.

Unit III
Isometric projections: Isometric scales, isometric views of Simple objects.

Unit IV
Introduction to computer-aided drafting (CAD): Cartesian and Polar Co-ordinate system, Absolute and Relative Co-ordinates systems; Basic drawing commands: Line, Point, Rectangle, Polygon, Circle, Arc, Ellipse, Polyline; Basic editing Commands: Basic Object Selection Methods, Window and Crossing Window, Erase, Move, Copy, Offset, Fillet, Chamfer, Trim, Extend, Mirror. Display Commands: Zoom, Pan, Redraw, and Regenerate; Simple dimensioning and text, Simple exercises.

UnitV
Solid modelling: Basics of 2-D solid modelling

LABORATORY
Drawing for topics covered in the theory as suggested by the course coordinator.

EVALUATION
Evaluation will be continuous an integral part of the class as well through external assessment.

Course objectives: Engineering drawing is an important tool for all Engineers and for many others professionals. It is the language of Engineers. Engineering Drawing communicates all needed information from the engineer who designed a part to the workers who will manufacture it.
The aim of the subject is to equip students with the fundamentals of Computer Aided Engineering Drawing and to further the ability to communicate information by graphical means.

Module -1.........................6 Hours
Introduction to Computer Aided Sketching: Introduction, Drawing Instruments and their uses, BIS conventions, Lettering, Dimensioning and free hand practicing. Computer screen, layout of the software, standard tool bar/menus and description of most commonly used tool bars, navigational tools. Co-ordinate system and reference planes. of HP, VP, RPP & LPP. of 2D/3D environment. Selection of drawing size and scale. Commands and creation of Lines, Co-ordinate points, axes, poly-lines, square, rectangle, polygons, splines, circles, ellipse, text, move, copy, off-set, mirror, rotate, trim, extend, break, chamfer, fillet, curves, constraints viz. tangency, parallelism, inclination and perpendicularity. Dimensioning, line conventions, material conventions and lettering.
Module -2.........................20 Hours
Orthographic projections: Introduction, Definitions - Planes of projection, reference line and
conventions employed, Projections of points in all the four quadrants, Projections of straight lines (located in First quadrant/first angle only), True and apparent lengths, True and apparent inclinations to reference planes (No application problems). 
Orthographic Projections of Plane Surfaces (First Angle Projection Only): Introduction, Definitions–projections of plane surfaces–triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus, pentagon, hexagon and circle, planes in different positions by change of position method only (No problems on punched plates and composite plates).

Module -3.........................28 Hours
Projections of Solids (First angle Projection only): Introduction, Definitions – Projections of right regular tetrahedron, hexahedron (cube), prisms, pyramids, cylinders and cones in different positions (No problems on octahedrons and combination solid).

Module -4.........................15 Hours
Sections And Development of Lateral Surfaces of Solids: Introduction, Section planes, Sections, Section views, Sectional views, Apparent shapes and True shapes of Sections of right regular prisms, pyramids, cylinders and cones resting with base on HP. (No problems on sections of solids)
Development of lateral surfaces of above solids, their frustums and truncations. (No problems on lateral surfaces of trays, tetrahedrons, spheres and transition pieces).

Module -5.........................15 Hours
Isometric projection: Introduction, Isometric scale, Isometric projection of simple plane figures, Isometric projection of tetrahedron, hexahedron(cube), right regular prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, spheres, cut
spheres and combination of solids (Maximum of three solids).

Course outcomes: After studying this course,

  1. Students will be able to demonstrate the usage of CAD software.
  2. Students will be able to visualize and draw Orthographic projections, Sections of solids and Isometric views of solids.
  3. Students are evaluated for their ability in applying various concepts to solve practical problems related to engineering drawing.
Scheme of Examination
  1. Moduler 1 is only for practice and Internal Assessment and not for examination.
  2. Question paper for each batch of students will be sent online by VTU and has to be downloaded before the commencement of Examination of each batch. The answer sheets will have to be jointly evaluated by the Internal & External examiners.
  3. A maximum of THREE questions will be set as per the following pattern (No mixing of questions from different Modules). Module 2: 20 marks; Module 3: 30 marks; Module 4 or 5: 25 Marks; Total 80 Marks.
  4. Students have to submit the computer printouts and the sketches drawn on the graph sheets at the end of the examination. Both Internal & External examiners have to jointly evaluate the solutions (sketches) and computer display & printouts of each student for 80 marks (35 marks for solutions & sketches + 45 marks for computer display and printouts) and submit the marks list along with the solution (sketches) on graph sheets & computer printouts in separate covers.
  5. Each batch must consist of a minimum of 10 students and a maximum of 12 students.
  6. Examination can be conducted in parallel batches, if necessary.

Scheme of Evaluation for Internal Assessment (25 Marks)(a) 15 Marks for Class work (Sketching & Computer Aided Engineering drawing printouts in A4 size sheets).
(b) 10 Marks for test in the same pattern as that of the main examination.(Better of the two Tests).All the solutions must be valued on the spot by examining the sketches, display and the hard copies. All the sketches including the computer printouts must be submitted and they must be preserved for one year.

UNIT IV

UNIT-III
Isometric Projections: Isometric projections and views of simple and truncated simple solids, sphere, hemisphere and their combinations in simple position. Conversion of Pictorial views to Orthographic views by free hand sketching.
Sections of Solids: Sections and sectional views of right angular solids - Prism, Cylinder, Pyramid and Cone. (There is a repetation of the content in Units II and III)

UNIT-IV
Development of Surfaces: Development of surfaces of simple and cut regular solids - Prism, Pyramid, Cylinder and Cone.

1. Introduction to Engineering Graphics:
Drawing instruments and accessories, BIS - SP 46. Use of plane scales and Representative Fraction.
2. Engineering Curves: ...................Teaching Hours 6
Classification and application of Engineering Curves, Construction of Conics, Cycloidal Curves, Involutes and Spirals along with normal and tangent to each curve.

3. Projections of Points and Lines:
Introduction to principal planes of projections, Projections of the points located in same quadrant and different quadrants, Projections of line with its inclination to one reference plane and with two reference planes. True length and inclination with the reference planes.
4. Projections of Planes:
Projections of planes (polygons, circle and ellipse) with its inclination to one reference plane and with two reference planes. Concept of auxiliary plane method for projections of the plane.
5. Projections of Solids and Section of Solids: Classification of solids. Projections of solids (Cylinder, Cone, Pyramid and Prism along with frustum) with its inclination to one reference plane and with two reference planes. Section of such solids and the true shape of the section.

6. Orthographic Projections: Fundamental of projection along with classification, Principal planes of projection, Projections from the pictorial view of the object on the principal planes for view from front, top and sides using first angle projection method and third angle projection method, Full Sectional View.
7. Isometric Projections and Isometric View or Drawing: Isometric Scale, Conversion of orthographic views into isometric projection, isometric view or drawing.

The power-point slides should be put up on the web-site of the College/ Institute, along with the names of the students of the group, the name of the faculty, Department and College on the first slide.

AIM: To develop graphic skills in students.

OBJECTIVE:

  • To develop in students graphic skill for communication of concepts, ideas and design of engineering products and 
  • To expose them to existing national standards related to technical drawings.

Concepts and conventions (Not for Examination) ................ 1 hour
Importance of graphics in engineering applications – Use of drafting instruments – BIS conventions and specifications – Size, layout and folding of drawing sheets – Lettering and dimensioning.

UNIT I: PLANE CURVES AND FREE HAND SKETCHING ................ 14 hours
Basic geometrical constructions, curves used in engineering practices: Conics – construction of ellipse, Parabola and hyperbola by eccentricity method – construction of cycloid – construction of involutes of square and circle – Drawing of tangents and normal to the above curves.
Scales: Construction of diagonal and vernier scales.
Visualization concepts and Free hand sketching: Visualization principles - Representation of Three Dimensional objects – Layout of views - Free hand sketching of multiple views from pictorial views of objects.

UNIT II: PROJECTION OF POINTS, LINES AND PLANE SURFACES ................ 14 hours
Orthographic projection – principles – principle planes – First angle projection – Projection of points.
Projection of straight lines (only first angle projections) inclined to both the principal planes – Determination of true lengths and true inclinations by rotating line method and traces
Projection of planes (polygonal and circular surfaces) inclined to both principal planes by rotating object method.

UNIT III: PROJECTION OF SOLIDS ................ 14 hours
Projection of simple solids like prisms, pyramids, cylinder and cone and truncated solids when the axis is inclined to one of the principal plane by rotating object method and auxiliary plane method.

UNIT IV: PROJECTION OF SECTIONED SOLIDS AND DEVELOPMENT OF SURFACES ................ 14 hours
Sectioning of above solids in simple vertical position when the cutting plane is inclined to one of the principal planes and perpendicular to the other – Obtaining true shape of section.
Development of lateral surfaces of simple and sectioned solids – Prisms, pyramids, cylinders and cones – Development of lateral surfaces of solids with cut-outs and holes.

UNIT V: ISOMETRIC AND PERSPECTIVE PROJECTIONS ................ 14 hours
Principles of isometric projection – isometric scale – isometric projections of simple solids and truncated solids – prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones – combination of two solid objects in simple vertical positions and miscellaneous problems.
Perspective projection of simple solids – prisms, pyramids and cylinders by visual ray method.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING (Demonstration Only) ................ 3 hours
Introduction to drafting packages and demonstration of their use.

Syllabus
 
Introduction: Introduction to technical drawing and its language. Lines, lettering, dimensioning, scaling of figures, symbols and drawing instruments. (1 sheet practice)

MODULE I
Plain curves: Conic sections by eccentricity method. Construction of ellipse: (i) Arc of circles method (ii) Rectangle method (ii) Concentric circles method. Construction of parabola (i) Rectangle method (ii) Tangent method. Construction of hyperbola (i) Arc of circles method (ii) given ordinate, abscissa and the transverse axis (iii) given the asymptotes and a point on the curve. Construction of Tangent and Normal at any point on these curves
Miscellaneous curves: Construction of Cycloid, Epicycloid and Hypocycloid, Involute of a circle. Archimedian spiral, Logarithmic spiral and Helix. Construction of Tangent and Normal at any point on these curves.
Projection of points and lines: Types of projections, Principles of Orthographic projection. Projections of points and lines. Determination of true length, inclination with planes of projection and traces of lines.

MODULE II
Projection of solids: Projection of simple solids such as prisms, pyramids, cone, cylinder, tetrahedron, octahedron, sphere and their auxiliary projections.
Sections of solids: Types of cutting planes, section of simple solids cut by parallel, perpendicular and inclined cutting planes. Their projections and true shape of cut sections.
Development of surfaces: Development of surfaces of (i) simple solids like prisms, pyramids, cylinder and cone (ii) Cut regular solids.

Isometric projection: Isometric scale, Isometric view and projections of simple solids like prisms, pyramids, cylinder, cone sphere, frustum of solids
and also their combinations.
Intersection of surfaces: Intersection of surfaces of two solids as given below.

Perspective projection: Principles of perspective projection, definition of perspective terminology. Perspective projection of simple solids like prisms and pyramids in simple positions.
CAD: Introduction to CAD systems, Benefits of CAD, Various Soft wares for CAD, Demonstration of any one CAD software.

  1. First angle projection to be followed
